A two-day conference "Towards a green economy" was inaugurated in Katowice. Elisa Ferreira, EU Commissioner for Cohesion Policy and Reforms, accepted the invitation of Jakub Chełstowski, Marshal of the Silesian Voivodeship.

The aim of the event is to discuss the future of Europe and post-mining regions in the context of changes related to the green economy. The conference was attended by representatives of the government, the Minister of Funds and Regional Policy Małgorzata Jarosińska-Jedynak, headed by Commissioner Elisa Ferreira, local government officials, experts and representatives of European mining regions.

The initiator and originator of the conference is Marshal Jakub Chełstowski. Commissioner Elisa Ferreira emphasized that from the planned amount of EUR 7.5 billion under the Just Transition Fund, EUR 2 billion is to reach Poland.

"We are united in the face of challenges and should change the world for our children and grandchildren. We must minimize the social and economic costs of the transformation. Europe is today on the treshold of a new industrial revolution, in which climate policy has an important place. Transformation is costly, but also requires security for people who work in industry. Our commitment is to support regions such as Silesia, because they have built the strength of our economy",  explained Elisa Ferreira.

Marshal Jakub Chełstowski pointed out that the Silesian Voivodeship is changing and is focusing on innovation in the economy, but effective transformation cannot exclude anyone, and the region needs time to implement the proposed changes.

"The Silesian Voivodeship is the largest economic region in Poland, where the transformation has been going on for years. Katowice is an example of successful change, but many cities in our region are still struggling with this challenge. The world is changing, but the transformation cannot exclude anyone. We want to develop faster, innovation and smart specializations are our future, thanks to cooperation with the government we can implement many ambitious projects, and EU funds allow to implement these changes. I am glad that Commissioner Elisa Ferreira accepted our invitation, it proves that we are moving in one direction and want to change the region and Europe together," said Marshal Jakub Chełstowski.

During the second part of the meeting the discussion was about the transformation of mining regions and recommendations for the future, as well as cooperation between regions with similar profile in Europe. Apart from Commissioner Elisa Ferreira and the host of the event, Marshal Jakub Chełstowski, among the panelists there were: Michał Woś, Member of the Council of Ministers (PL), Małgorzata Jarosińska-Jedynak, Minister of Funds and Regional Policy (PL), Jerzy Buzek, Member of the European Parliament, Lilyana Pavlova, Vice-President of the European Investment Bank, Maria Belarmina Diaz Aguado, General Director of Energy, Mining and Reactivation, Principality of Asturias, Mark Speich, Secretary of State from North Rhine-Westphalia, Ivo Vondrák, Governor of the Moravian-Silesian Region and Amaury Caprasse, Deputy Head of Cabinet of the Minister-President of Wallonia.

The Minister Małgorzata Jarosińska-Jedynak spoke about Poland's preparations for transformation towards a green economy.

"This is a huge challenge. It is worth recalling that 36 out of 50 cities with the most polluted air in Europe are located in Poland. We are undertaking a number of activities, using EU funds and government funding. Only within the framework of the Infrastructure and Environment Programme, we allocated PLN 12 billion for the energy transformation. We want to continue this way, that is investments in renewable energy sources, electricity, heat, energy modernization of blocks of flats and enterprises. We need to cooperate at every level, in order to even out the developmental differences and achieve climate neutrality. We need to adapt the support model to the needs of a specific region" - the Minister Małgorzata Jarosińska-Jedynak emphasized.
